A food lover’s guide to the iconic eateries of Connaught Place in Delhi

Connaught Place is a place where I love exploring meal by meal. The white columns link bakeries, coffee shops, and restaurants that have become the well-known addresses of Delhi diners for decades. One can learn a lot by having a quick breakfast at one place and a lengthy lunch at another place.

For this trip, I decided to spread my meals over two days as I wanted to have an experience of dining at places that excel in different cuisines, starting from South Indian breakfast to Punjabi cuisine and ending up with a bakery bite.

Flying to Delhi for a food-focused break

I chose business class flights for my Delhi trip and appreciated how comfortably the journey fitted around my plans. Priority check-in was useful, while the spacious seat gave me room to relax. I enjoyed the onboard meal and warm service, then rested before landing.

From Indira Gandhi International Airport, I continued to my hotel and settled in. Connaught Place became my base for meals during the visit. I saved the restaurants’ block names and addresses on my phone, which made finding each entrance much easier once I started walking.

Saravanaa Bhavan on Janpath for breakfast

I started my day at the Janpath branch of Saravanaa Bhavan, whose exact address is 50 Janpath. My menu was simple, consisting of a masala dosa and filter coffee. It was an interesting breakfast because, although there were only two items on the menu, it was quite varied.

The dosa was eaten while it was hot, with the chutneys tasted separately. Filter coffee was a perfect ending to the meal. This is a good place for breakfast if you plan to explore Janpath later on. Be sure to know which branch you’re going to, since Saravanaa Bhavan has another location in Connaught Circle.

United Coffee House for an unhurried afternoon

United Coffee House, at E-15 in the Inner Circle, suited the afternoon when I wanted a proper table and time to sit. Its history and broad menu make it a distinctive part of Connaught Place’s dining scene. Indian and Continental dishes share space on the menu.

I kept my order light with a grilled vegetable sandwich and coffee. That gave me time to appreciate the room, with its decorative interiors and chandeliers, while enjoying a simple meal. For a fuller lunch, decide what you feel like eating before working through the extensive menu. Reserve ahead when planning around a particular mealtime.

Wenger’s in A Block for a bakery stop

I chose Wenger’s as my choice during the time between my long trips. It can be found at the A-16 address of the Inner Circle of Connaught Place. As there was a large number of choices of savoury foods, including the vegetable patties that were listed on the menu of this bakery, I selected one of them.

In order to be better prepared before selecting such an option at the bakery counter, it would be necessary to decide whether you want something sweet or savoury. It would be wise to ask what fillings it has. If you choose the items to take away, you should get advice on packaging.

Kake Da Hotel for dal makhani and paneer

I was served dinner at Kake Da Hotel in Municipal Market, Connaught Place. The one item that caught my eye was dal makhani because, as per the description of the place, this delicacy is slow-cooked. The creamy lentils make an amazing dinner when accompanied by bread.

The next choice could be Paneer Lababdar with paneer in a tomato- and cashew-based sauce. It can be shared with your friends over the food; afterwards, you may order bread. Do not forget to mention your allergy to either dairy or nuts. Ensure the location of the hotel in Municipal Market.

Final thoughts on eating around Connaught Place

This experience has made me appreciate how worthy of multiple visits Connaught Place is. For instance, Saravanaa Bhavan would serve a meal for breakfast, United Coffee House for a longer lunch break, Wenger’s would suit a snack in between and Kake Da Hotel could be my place to enjoy dinner. Having the meals distributed throughout two days allowed me to arrive hungry and make thoughtful orders while taking leisurely walks in between.
